Tattoo Regret | Tom Waits on Warm Beer, Cold Women and Tattoos
Warm Beer and Cold Women is a great old Tom Waits number from his Nighthawks at the Diner album (1975). So what does that have to do with tattoos? Admittedly, nothing. But I am a huge Tom Waits fan and I try to plug him every chance I get. Besides, he does express some tattoo regret in this song. If you take look at the excerpted lyrics below, you’ll see that it shows up in the fifth line:
All my conversations now, I’ll just be talkin’ about you baby
I’m boring some sailor as I try to get through
I just want him to listen now
I said, ‘That’s all you have to do’
He said I’m better off without you, ’til I showed him my tattoo
And now the moon’s risin’, there ain’t no time to lose
It’s time to get down to drinkin’
tell the band to play the blues
And the drinks are on me, now I’ll buy a couple rounds
at the last ditch attempt saloon
Have a listen to the video. This is one of my very favorite Tom Wait songs from what is undoubtedly his best album. He sounds great on this track–brilliant singing. Also, there’s a killer sax solo near the end, thumpin’ stand up base all the way through, and the piano ain’t half bad neither.
If you like this song, I recommend going over to YouTube and giving a listen to the rest of the songs on the album: they’re all good–and the lyrics are often hilarious. When they’re not hilarious they’re poetic in an urban-pool-hall-chic sort of way. Like this excerpt from another song on the album, Nighthawk Postcards (From Easy Street):Yeah, check out the street and it looks likes kinda of a…
kinda a blur drizzle down the plateglass
And there’s a neon swizzle stick stirring up the sultry night air
Looks like a yellow biscuit of a buttery cue ball moon
Rollin’ maverick across an obsidian sky
Here’s a link to a site that has the lyrics to all the songs on the album, if you’re interested.
